Welcome to my Creative Papermaking Web Site. My name is barb crowden and I hope to convey to you, in the following pages, some of the exciting applications and outcomes of this versatile medium.

I came to papermaking via ceramics and weaving. Having always worked with texture, the discovery of papermaking was a very exciting one for me, because it meant that I could create any number of effects by simply using and manipulating paper pulp. Since learning to make paper in the early 80's I haven't looked back, and because the medium of creative papermaking is so versatile I'll be exploring it's potential for years to come.
With Papermaking I can create the textures I want by using my
preferred techniques of embedding and embossing and I can create my
colours through the use of dyes, pigments and surface treatments. I
can make the paper look opaque or transparent, hard or soft, rough or
smooth, or like leather or metal.
I love it!
Many artists and indigenous cultures have influenced me over the years, but I always come back to the art and architecture of the Medieval, Baroque and Rennaissance periods, and the work of Antoni Gaudi, Henri Matisse, Anselm Kiefer, David Hockney, the post impressionists and Australian artists Leonard French, and paper makers Katherine Nix, and Penny Carey-Wells. I'm also a fan of the lustre glazed ceramics of the late Beatrice Wood.
