Screens

Screens are a wonderful format in which to work. They can be functional and yet unconventional at the same time. My screens have been used for theatre performances, as backdrops for New Age workshops, room dividers and dressing rooms. They are extremely versatile ,visually appealing and very sturdy and strong. Paper is the perfect medium for screens - it can be opaque or transparent depending on the use of light and the types of paper used.

I prefer to work with cotton/abaca paper, but occasionally use oriental papers such as kozo, or suksuka. They are embedded with anything from cotton buds to driftwood and the paper treated with various surface techniques. Embellishments such as gold studs, candle holders, and wrought iron work are incorporated to give the screens a richness and art nouveau style - my Gaudi fetish!

Two examples of my room dividing screens are 'The Court Jester' and 'The Queens of Hearts'.

Jester-10

THE COURT JESTER 1994

The Court Jester is a 3 panelled screen inspired by the Danny Kaye movie of the same name:

"THE PELLET WITH THE POISON'S IN THE VESSEL WITH THE PESTLE, THE CHALICE FROM THE PALACE HAS THE BREW THAT IS TRUE, THE PELLET WITH THE POISON'S IN THE FLAGON WITH THE DRAGON........."

This is a fun piece incorporating embedding and casting techniques as well as wrought iron work. The trademark of the jester, the diamond, features throughout the design, and six cast jester heads act as a top border to the outside screens.

The paper is cotton, and is painted with various surface treatments to create the look of leather.

The outside panels are embedded with cotton buds and embellished with brass studs that go through to the back. This makes the back look like chain mail - the overall effect is medieval.

THE QUEEN OF HEARTS 1996

This 3 panelled screen uses a similar format to The Court Jester and incorporates the same techniques and surface treatments.

These screens would be ideal in private collections as room dividers and dressing areas, or in trendy boutiques as dressing cubicles. They could also be used in fashionable corporate offices to create atmosphere, or similarly in restaurants to add a little privacy .

They will also be used in a Performance Exhibition where, along with other screens, they will become backdrops to individual 3 minute perfomances of various kinds.

Blind-12

FREEDOM /CAPTIVITY /FREEDOM 1996

This is a different type of screen - in fact it is a vertical blind, covered with handmade cotton/abaca paper, one side of which is embedded with paddle pop sticks and painted to look like a wall with graffiti, the other painted by artist Bill Insch to create a powerful mural.

This type of artwork doubles as a two sided mural and a screen, and is a great way of utilising art in a functional way. Perfect for large streetlevel office windows or for brightening up the house. Definitely more exciting than curtains.
