Wall Pieces

These are usually quite large - approximately 1.5 metres square. I often use fabric to join the various panels together and embed bones, twigs etc within the paper to create texture. The paper is then subjected to various surface treatments to create a leathery appearance and embellishments such as beads and feathers are added to complete the picture.

17LA LOBA'S MANTLE
The Bone Gatherer
- was made for the Wild Womens Art Exhibition in Bega, 1994. The myth of La Loba comes from Clarissa Pinkola Estes book Women Who Run With The Wolves.

The following passage from this book inspired La Lobas Mantle:

"In the tale, La Loba sings over the bones she has gathered. To sing means to use the soul-voice. It means to say on the breath the truth of one's own power and one's need to breathe soul over the thing that is ailing or in need of restoration. This is done by descending into the deepest mood of great love and feeling, till one's desire for relationship with the wildish Self overflows, then to speak one's soul from that frame of mind. That is singing over the bones......"

This piece has been exhibited widely at The Really Big Paper Show - Tin Sheds Gallery, Sydney University, Tamworth Regional Gallery, Broken Hill Regional Gallery and Bega Valley Regional Gallery.

La Loba's Mantle is in the collection of Deb and Dave Funston, Bega.
