RINGBALIN WORKSHOPS

PLANT FIBRES

After learning the basics of sheet forming, it's time to explore the backyard for suitable plants to cook up and beat. Many beautiful papers can be made with plants from the garden such as flax, bamboo, iris, lemongrass. Experiment - some plants work, some don't. Others work well mixed with something else, like oriental fibres or some recycled pulps. Because the sheets are finer and harder to couch (remove from the mould/screen)papermaking experience is an advantage but not essential.

ORIENTAL FIBRES

These fibres come from Japan, the Phillipines, Thailand, and Nepal. These countries produce extremely fine papers using traditional papermaking methods. In Japan the popular plant fibres are kozo(Japanese Mulberry),mitsumata (Edgeworthia Papyrifera - also known as Daphne in Nepal), and gampi. I have , growing in my paper garden, both the Japanese Mulberry and the mitsumata/Daphne. This makes it possible for participants to see the process unfold from harvesting the raw material through to forming the sheets. Other fibres that will be provided are manila hemp or abaca, and suksuka from the Phillipines. Eastern papermaking methods will be demonstrated and encouraged.

CREATIVE BOOKMAKING

This is a workshop where anything goes - a place to explore the endless possibilities of the Book. All manner of papers and surface treatments will be used to create unusual and exciting books of all kinds. This is a good workshop for children and their teachers, or for serious papermakers who want to create an Artists Book.
